CALL TO REOPEN BEDS AT CITY'S PUBLIC HOSPITALS

Date Published: 27-Apr-2012
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation is calling for 108 beds to be reopened at the city's public hospitals to deal with the current A&E crisis.
It comes as full capacity protocol remains in place at University Hospital Galway today [Apr 27].
The overcrowding measure acts as an alert to the county health system and was activated by senior management at UHG last Monday week (16 April).
The INMO says 17 beds are available to deal with the increased demand at UHG and a further 91 beds are available at Merlin Park Hospital.
18 patients are on trolleys at the UHG emergency department today and a further 3 are awaiting beds on wards.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Gavin Duffy of the INMO says moving patients to wards only moves the problem elsewhere and empty beds must be used.
