There must be a balanced approach to the way in which land is being designated under EU law in Connemara.

That's the view of Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív, who is calling on Gaeltacht minister Jimmy Deenihan to visit the region.

Connemara is already the most designated area in the country with 85 percent of the land and much of the adjoining waters designated.

Deputy O'Cuiv wants Minister Deenihan to discuss proposals to designate even more parts of Connemara as special areas of conservation.

The Fianna Fáil TD says communities are already struggling to cope with the habitats directive.
