An amendment to save Galway Airport has been shot down by those who claim to support its survival.

That's according to Sinn Féin's Trevor O'Clochartaigh following a debate on tourism in the Seanad this week.

The Cabinet will meet in Dublin on Tuesday morning to decide whether to provide the €1.7 million which is needed to keep the Carnmore facility open until the end of the year.

Airport Manager Joe Walsh says if they don't get the funding Galway airport will close and 62 people will lose their jobs.

Sinn Féin put forward an amendment to support regional airports such as Galway Airport by reinstating vital Government funding.

Trevor O'Clochartaigh points out Fine Gael Galway Senators Fidelma Healy Eames and Michael Mullins voted against it under pressure from the Government whip.
