BAD WEATHER A FACTOR IN CONNEMARA PLANE CRASH

Date Published: 24-Jan-2012
A report into the deaths of two men in a plane crash in Connemara three years ago has recommended that the Airs Corps review some of its practices.
Air Corps personnel, 32 year old Captain Derek Furniss from Dublin and 22 year old cadet, David Jevins from Wexford were killed in the crash near Cornamona in October 2009.
They had been on a training exercise from Casement Aerodrome in Dublin headed for Galway airport.
In technical terms, the probable cause of the crash was due to spatial disorientation due to somatogravic illusion following the loss of situational awareness.
However, the weather was also bad when the plane came down near the Maamturk mountains.
