Athenry district court sittings are to come to an end.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter announced in the Daíl this evening that the court is to be relocated because of its 'unsuitability as a venue'.

Athenry does not have a courthouse but the courts do sit at a premises in the middle of the town.

At a recent meeting of the courts service, it was agreed to close a number of district courthouses including Ballymote, Boyle, Templemore, Kiltimagh and Claremorris.

Their functions will now be transferred to other courthouses.
