1500 Eircom customers and 300 ESB customers across Galway without service following storm damage

Galway bay fm newsroom - Around 1500 eircom customers and up to 300 ESB customers across Galway are still without service this evening because of the adverse weather conditions.

Eircom says due to exceptionally high fault volumes in the city and county it could be five to six days before all faults are repaired.

Meanwhile, homes and businesses in Moycullen, Roundstone and Cashal are still without power this evening.

The ESB is advising crews are working to repair the faults and says there is a chance networks around Salthill will be switched off again this evening as a safety precaution ahead of high tide.

Meanwhile, the city council is distributing sandbags to businesses and homes to prevent further flood damage at high tide this evening.

Leisureland in Salthill has been extensively flooded and will remain closed to the public until at least Monday, while the toft carpark close to Galway atlantiquarium is still submerged with several cars abandoned.

The high winds also broke down a coastal protection wall erected in Ballyconneely in 1942.

Some local roads across the county are still impassable because of fallen debris and motorists may experience some delays because of residual flooding.

Galway County Council is urging motorists, pedestrians and property owners to exercise caution over the coming days.

A yellow wind warning remains in place for Munster, Leinster and Connacht along with Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan until later this evening.
