Drivers across Ireland could get up to €8,500 under new scrappage scheme

The scrappage scheme aims to encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles
A new scheme aimed to encourage motorists to make the switch from petrol and diesel cars to electric vehicles is set to be introduced by the Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien.
The proposed scrappage scheme would see drivers receive a financial incentive for scrapping older, higher-emission vehicles when purchasing an electric vehicle, with support for second hand EVs also understood to be under consideration.
Under the proposals, eligible motorists could receive support worth up to €8,000 when scrapping an older petrol or diesel vehicle.
The package is expected to combine a scrappage payment with existing electric vehicle incentives already available to buyers meaning €5,000 would be offered to eligible motorists who would dispose of a vehicle that’s more than 13 years old.
This payment would be combined with the existing EV purchasing grant of €3,500, making a total of up to €8,500 per vehicle.
Reports indicate the scheme will operate on a “first come, first served” basis and will initially target older, vehicles.
