It was one of the more trying things to endure during the lockdown. Watching as the greys emerged victorious, that regrowth announcing itself to the world as a beacon of shame or that lovely honed haircut going to pieces. When your hair is flailing, it can leave you feeling deeply out of sorts. And when it’s on form, you really do feel a million dollars.

Deborah Fleming knows all about making women feel good in her role as hairdresser with Barry’s Hair Studio on Shop Street in the city. She has worked with the family-run business since 2015 after graduating from the Irish College of Hairdressing on the Tuam Road in 2011, moving here from her native Wexford.

She was struck by the sheer numbers of women who were asking her about their hair concerns.

“There were clients who suffered with scalp or hair loss problems, dandruff, oily scalp, psoriasis, hair thinning, or alopecia. There are so many women – and men – who are struggling with their hair.”

She went to doctor google to help but found herself unable to provide professional advice despite her years as a hairdresser.

So, she took the leap of enrolling in a two-year course in London’s Institute of Trichologists. Luckily, she had completed her study before Covid. She was then able to use her time off work during the lockdown to set up her own clinic, The Scalp Room, which is now open in a private space in Barry’s.

Trichology is the science of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair. Clinical trichology is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the human hair and scalp. One of the biggest conditions for trichologists is Alopecia - the clinical term for any type of hair loss, especially on the scalp.

It can be diffuse - throughout the scalp - it can be in a pattern, it can be temporary or it can be permanent. You will need to understand what type of Alopecia you have to best treat it to achieve the best outcomes.

The most common type of hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia, or Male Pattern or Female Pattern loss.
