Hillary and Eanan Murphy had been trying to have a baby for two years after getting engaged.  At 28 and 32, they had not left it late in life to try, but something deep down told Hillary she would have trouble conceiving.

“I met my husband at 19 so I knew were always going to have kids and get married. I had a family history where a few people were doing IVF and had ovarian cysts. I always had the feeling it wasn’t going to be easy.”

She happened to mention it to her GP when she went in for something else and was told that it certainly warranted further investigation.

She had a cyst removed at age 16 and the medics thought it may have resulted in a blockage so she underwent a hysterosalpingogram, which involves injecting dye into the Fallopian tubes. Nearly one third of women conceive after the procedure but not Hillary.

She was diagnosed with unexplained fertility, which means there is no underlying cause for the inability to conceive but it can affect as many as one on three couples struggling to fall pregnant.

At the ReproMed fertility clinic in Galway she did two rounds of fertility treatments known as Time Sexual Intercourse where the body is stimulated to release the egg from the follicle. She then switched to IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) where embryos are fertilised outside the body before being transferred back to the womb.

“I responded very, very well to that. I had 29 follicles in a week but it’s about quality not quantity. They went down to 16 and then we had four embryos and Ayra was one of those.”
