West End and Broadway star, David Shannon will be in Galway on Sunday, March 8, to give a masterclass on musicals and acting. His visit follows the launch of a new all-Ireland group offering training to young people in musical theatre. The Irish Youth Musical Theatre (IYMT) was launched in Dublin last week by the renowned performer Colm Wilkinson, who is the group’s patron.

It will offer professional training opportunities to the next generation of Irish theatre talent, North and South. That will be done through masterclasses, short courses and a National Youth stage production.

Top Irish performers and coaches who have established reputations on Broadway and the West End, will return home to provide these masterclasses. They include David Shannon whose West End stage credits include Come from Away, Phantom of the Opera, Matilda and The Beautiful Game, for which he was Olivier nominated.

On March 8, he will lead an intensive Audition Preparation Session, which is designed to help young Irish actors age 14-24 who are preparing for an upcoming audition. Whether it’s for third-level drama school, a local or school musical or in preparation for the new company’s national auditions for its first national youth production, this masterclass is designed to help young performers realise their dreams.

The IYMT is a cross-Border initiative, being run in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Its artistic director is London-based Irish theatre director, Séimí Campbell.

Other IYMT ambassadors and tutors include Irish West End and Broadway stars, Rachel Tucker (Come From Away, Wicked, The Last Ship), Killian Donnelly (Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Kinky Boots), Fra Fee (The Ferryman, Translations, Les Misérables Motion Picture) and David Shannon.
