Africa, Mother Of All, an event featuring original music, song, poetry and Afro dance will take place in the Town Hall Theatre Galway Tuesday, May 7, at 8pm.

The show is the brainchild of composer and musician Sharon Murphy, who is also co-ordinating it.

The title song, Africa, Mother Of All, which Sharon has written, celebrates the fact that the human race has its roots on the continent of Africa.

“People’s origins can be traced back to an African woman who lived some 250,000 years ago. We are all connected,” says Sharon, who works with the Galway One World Centre (GOWC).

This organisation, based in Clarinbridge, provides training in global justice and anti-racism education for schools, colleges, youth and community groups and tailored teacher-training programmes and is supported by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.

On May 7, Sharon will be joined by Galway poet and storyteller Adedotun Adekeye, Afro dancer Lapree Lala and the trio, Glas, made up of cellist Clare Sawtell, guitarist Gaie Stewart and harpist Eileen Fleming.

A backroom team of supporters are helping to organise the event and will be on hand that evening,

“We are welcoming communities across Galway City and County, including people of African descent, White Irish and Black Irish to celebrate and promote African heritage, culture, and its contribution to the wider community, and to promote a greater knowledge and awareness of people of African descent,” says Sharon.

Tickets are €10 from tht.ie, 091-569777 and the Town Hall box office.
