Every good TV crime drama needs an outsider as its main character and that’s the case with the award-winning Corp + Anam, first broadcast in 2011, which returns to TG4 next Thursday, November 27, for a new four-part series.

Corp + Anam (Body and Soul), which is shot here in Galway, features Diarmuid de Faoite as Cathal Mac Iarnáin, an investigative journalist obsessed with uncovering corruption. Series two sees him tackling corruption within the legal profession, which doesn’t bode well for his marriage to solicitor Mairéad, played by Maria Doyle Kennedy. In the first episode a young woman is raped and murdered by John Glynn, a serial offender given bail by a corrupt judge in spite of Garda appeals to remand him in custody. Pressure mounts on Cathal as he is implicated in her death. In his attempts to clear his name, he gets drawn into a deadly game that endangers those closest to him. This series of Corp + Anam was shot mostly between Oranmore and Galway City, with the City Courthouse featuring strongly, explains its producer Paddy Hayes. While Corp + Anam is a crime drama, it’s unusual in that its main character is not a detective or Garda; instead Cathal is a reporter pursuing different stories each week. So each episode requires a totally new cast of characters, says Paddy.
