Renmore resident Pat Creaven is a contestant in Glór Tíre’s nationwide search for a country star.

Pat Creaven, who hails from Woodbrook outside the East Galway village of Newbridge, is taking part in the popular programme, recorded in the City’s Quays Bar and broadcast weekly on TG4

One of 11 children, growing up on the family farm, with its joys and sorrows, Pat was drawn to country music where every song tells a story.

From childhood, he loved music. A pencil, or the handle of a sweeping brush would serve as his microphone as he entertained his family around the open fire. With his deep rich voice, he is at ease with songs in that genre.

Pat grew up in the era of the marquee, and danced to some of the big names of Irish country music. Larry Cunningham, Big Tom, and Brian Coll were all major influences. Other artists who influenced him included Charlie Pride, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash as well as Waterford’s Val Doonican.

Pat began serving his time a blocklayer at the age of 15. Later on, in his time as foreman on the many building sites around Galway City and County, his crew would complain that: “You couldn’t keep up with Creaven . . .  he works too hard and has only two speeds – fast and faster!”
