Over the Edge puts focus on non-fiction

Billy Hutchinson, Fiona Sampson, Rosita Sweetman and John Cunningham will feature in October’s Over The Edge: Open Reading which will take place next Thursday, October 28, from 6.30-8pm, via Zoom. This is Over The Edge’s annual non-fiction special. While the featured readers are writers of non-fiction, the usual open-mic session which is held afterwards will welcome poets and fiction writers.
NUIG History lecturer John Cunningham is a co-director of the Irish Centre for the Histories of Labour and Class. His writings on Irish social history and global labour history have been published extensively and, along with Ciaran McDonough, he has edited a book to mark the bicentenary of James Hardiman’s History of Galway. The collection, Galway Arts and Culture, 1820-2020, will be available next month.
Dubliner Rosita Sweetman has worked as a journalist with the Irish Press, Irish Times and Sunday Independent, as a runner and secretary at the BBC and as a research assistant on RTÉ. Her best-selling books include On Our Knees (1972), On Our Backs, Sexual Attitudes in a Changing Ireland (1979) and the novel Fathers Come First (1974) re-published by the Lilliput Press in 2015. She’s a critic for the Irish Times, Sunday Independent and Dublin Review of Books. Her most recent book, Feminism Backwards – part memoir, part documentary – was published last year by Mercier Press.
Fiona Sampson is an award-winning British poet and writer whose work is widely translated. Emeritus Professor of the University of Roehampton, her awards include the Newdigate Prize, Cholmondeley Prize and Hawthornden Fellowship, as well as various national Book of the Year selections.
