A documentary made by Ardrahan woman Orla Higgins about her grand-aunt Eileen Quinn, who was murdered by a member of the infamous RIC Auxiliary D division in November 1920 and the legacy of that killing, has been nominated for the prestigious International New York Festivals Radio Awards 2020.

The programme, Reprisals, is one of six finalists in the competition’s History category, up against entrants from Australia, the USA and the UK.

Reprisals was first broadcast on RTÉ last Summer as part of the popular Doc on One series and was downloaded more than 100,000 times in the following two months.

Orla’s next documentary, Kari Kola; Lighting up the World, will be broadcast on BBC World Service on Tuesday, April 14, as part of its In The Studio series.

Her previous documentary for RTÉ’s Doc on One, White Noise, won silver at last year’s New York Festivals Radio Awards in the Health/Medical category. It explored the mysterious world of people who suffer from tinnitus and the impact it has on their lives.

RTÉ along with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBS News Radio and Radio New Zealand, have received most nominations for this year’s New York Festivals awards. Categories also include Social Issues, Investigative Reporting, Music, Sports, and Environment and Ecology.

The jury, made up of an international panel of judges, shortlisted entries from 40 countries. They selected the finalists based on “production values, organisation, presentation of information, creativity and use of the medium”.
