No shortage of musical stars to dazzle at Claregalway Castle

This weekend a host of top acts will flock to Claregalway Castle for a weekend – not just of live music, but also a chance for attendees to enjoy a unique opportunity to see artists collaborate and workshop songs together. It’s the latest chapter in the spiralling story of Hibernacle, a project that has proven very successful through its eclectic range of artist-focused events and programmes since its launch shortly before Christmas of last year.
The brainchild of three of Ireland’s most established event-organisers in Pearse Doherty, Úna Molloy and Peter Kelly, it began as an attempt to reimagine the traditional format for Irish music festivals. Having experienced the value of collaborative sets and workshops abroad, the three set about employing similar techniques in their early projects.
The Saturday and Sunday sees Claregalway Castle play host to Hibernacle: Meet Me at the Castle. So far, the line-up includes Lisa Hannigan, Tolü Makay, Saint Sister and Jape. Collaboration remains very much at the heart of the occasion allowing music fans the chance to see these top stars workshop new songs together.
“It started with myself and Úna,” Pearse says of Hibernacle. “We had this notion a few years ago of trying to do something that involved more than just people coming and playing at a festival.
“I had a lot of experience of touring in America with the Saw Doctors and a lot of festivals would have collaborative stages or workshops in the woods and stuff. It’s a little bit different than what we saw here.
