Museum reopens with monuments and myths

Arts Week with Judy Murphy

Galway City Museum will reopen to the public next Tuesday, July 31, at 10am, with two new exhibitions, which explore aspects of Galway’s diverse heritage.  Admission to the Museum continues to be free but visitors will now have to book ahead and will need a ticket. This can be presented at the main entrance, either in a printed format or on a mobile phone.

Both exhibitions, Monument and The Corrib: Myth, Legend and Folklore, will be on the ground floor of the Museum – for now, that’s the only area of the civic space that will be open to the public.

The multi-disciplinary show Monument will focus on the stone forts of Aran, especially the world-renowned Dún Aonghasa, as it explores some of Europe's most impressive stone monuments, which are located on some of the continent’s smallest islands.

A presentation between the City Museum and Galway 2020, European Capital of Culture, Monument is the result of a collaboration between State agencies and institutions, and individual archaeologists and artists, all working across a range of disciplines.

It offers an insight into the archaeology, architecture, craft and design, cultural landscapes, construction, sustainability and social history of these monuments and the islands on which they were built.

Monument, which has been assisted by the National Museum of Ireland, will feature previously unseen material from archaeological excavations at Dún Aonghasa during the 1990s. And the exhibition will also feature specially commissioned pieces by 10 of Ireland’s top craftspeople, all of them inspired by Dún Aonghasa and the Aran Islands.

The works have been created by textile artist Áine Ní Chonghaile, from the Inis Meáin Knitting Company; glass artist Róisín De Buitléar; silversmith Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill; ceramicist Katherine West; basket-maker Joe Hogan; knitter Elain McBride; graphic artist Maeve Clancy; woodturner Alan Meredith; currach-maker Patrick Flaherty, and film-maker Colm Hogan.
