‘Making Home’ performance at Galway City Museum

‘Making Home’, an improvisational performance piece which took place in Galway City Museum just before Christmas, tapped into the human body to explore issues and stories around housing, the notion of having a home and of being homeless.
This event arose from a research project, Creation as Research, which Dance Movement Psychotherapist and Artist Bernadette Divilly organised last summer. Bernadette invited people to share their knowledge about housing issues, their experiences of homelessness and their stories of making homes – her aim with the project was to use the wisdom of the human body to create a performance piece about this era-defining issue.
“We make our first home in our mothers’ wombs; we choreograph and develop an intelligent network designed to help us motor outside the world of her body,” she explains. “This is our first experience of making a home and it is physical and direct. It carries our cultural and historical imprints long before words. This is our starting place.”
So, Bernadette felt it was important to return to the body to “research and recover essential knowledge” about life and home.
Those invited to participate in the project included people who were born in Ireland as well as people who have moved to Ireland and made Galway their home.
The participants investigated perceptions and habits connected to being at home or being homeless, using mindful movement practices. This was done using rhythm, body language, spatial organisation and the spoken word.
