Magic night in memory of much-missed Mary
Arts Week with Judy Murphy
There was laughter, there was sadness, there was reflection and, above all, there was music, song and poetry at the Town Hall Theatre last week for The Skite – Remembering Mary, an evening in memory of singer and producer, Mary McPartlan, who died on April 6 two years ago.
The venue was sold out for the occasion which featured music by the Máirtín O’Connor Band, Rita Connolly and Shaun Davy, The ConTempo Quartet, Steve Cooney, Carmel Dempsey and Frankie Gavin among others, alongside poetry and reminiscences from writers Eva Bourke, Vincent Woods, Michael Harding, Aodh Ó Coileáin, Hannah Kiely and Susan McKay.
All were friends of Mary and many of them had worked with the Leitrim-born woman during her long career in the arts in Galway.
The Skite – Remembering Mary, was produced by Lelia Doolan with financial assistance from NUI Galway and Gradam Ceoil TG4, and all proceeds went the Galway Simon Community.
The evening kicked off with Máirtín O’Connor’s band who were joined by Leitrim sean-nós dancer, Edwina Guckian. Rita Connolly’s songs for the occasion included Ripples in the Rockpools from the renowned Granuaile suite, composed by her husband Shaun Davy. She was accompanied by Shaun on keyboard and Steve Cooney on guitar, while uilleann piper, Elvin Moynagh led off The Brendan Voyage under the direction of Shaun Davey, who also composed that suite.
