Lasta Festival lights creative flames for young audiences

Galway’s Town Hall Theatre is involved in a new national 10-day arts festival, programmed by young people for young people, that’s taking place in eight venues countrywide from Friday, June 11, to Sunday, June 20.
The Town Hall’s line-up for the Lasta Festival includes performances and workshops in drama, dance and music, all programmed by three local curators. They are theatre-practitioner Lisa Mannion; NUIG final year Drama, Theatre and Performance student Oisín Parslow; and writer, director and performer Emily White.
Their online programme includes concerts from local groups NewDad and Clann Uí Fhlatharta as well as the opening show from new band Soda Blonde.
That free gig is on next Thursday, June 10, at 7pm. Soda Blonde is made up of singer Faye O’Rourke, guitarist Adam O’Regan, drummer Dylan Lynch and bassist Donagh Seaver-O’Leary, all former members of the group Little Green Cars which broke up in 2019. The four went on to create Soda Blonde and their debut album, Small Talk, will be released in July.
Indie four-piece NewDad will perform on Sunday, June 13, at 8pm and will be livestreamed from the Town Hall stage into people’s homes. NewDad launched their EP, Waves, to critical acclaim recently and are planning a nationwide tour later this year.
Caoimhe Ní Fhlatharta and her brothers Séamus and Rónán will be in concert on Tuesday, June 15, at 8pm. From the village of An Áird Mhóir, close to Carna, the three singers, dancers and multi-instrumentalists – with multpile All-Ireland medals – are renowned for their unique arrangements of sean-nós songs, especially their harmonisation.
