Gender bending in classical event

Music for Galway and the Galway Early Music Festival are joining forces for a concert entitled Witches, Bitches and Britches – gender bending in baroque opera.
The concert will take place next Friday night, May 13, at the Aula Maxima, NUIG at 8pm, and will feature Irish mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty with a chamber ensemble comprising Claire Duff and Anita Vedres (violins), Lisa Dowdall (viola) Aoife NicAthlaoich (cello) and David Adams (harpsichord).
This programme is the brainchild of Sharon Carty, who has brought many roles to life on stages in Ireland and Europe. Particularly taken with the baroque repertoire and being a mezzo-soprano, she very often finds herself playing not only female, but male roles as well.
The programme features the well-known virtuosic aria Son qual nave ch’agitata, written for the famous castrato Farinelli, by his brother Riccardo Broschi, as well as other beautiful ‘trouser-role’ arias by composers such as Nicolas Vivaldi and Handel, along with music from Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s beautiful setting of the Greek tragedy Medea and some other Handel anti-heroines.
Tickets are €18, MFG Friends and concessions €14 and students €6, from Opus 2, High Street or www.musicforgalway.ie or www. galwayearlymusic.com
