Fíbín opens new chapter in An Taibhdhearc story

Connemara theatre company Fíbín has taken over the programming and administration of An Taibhdhearc in Galway City. It’s the first time in An Taibhdhearc 93-year-history that another organisation has run the national Irish-language theatre.
Fíbín intends to develop a arts strategy to ensure a vibrant future for Irish language countrywide and will use the venue “to its fullest potential to place Irish language theatre at the heart of Galway”, according to Fíbín CEO Darach Ó Tuairisg.
“We are delighted and very proud to have this opportunity to run An Taibhdhearc and be part of a very innovative approach by the board”, he adds.
“An Taibhdhearc has a strong brand and is one of the best venues in the country in a prime location in Galway City. Theatre and the arts will see many challenges in the coming years but we believe there is huge potential for this theatre space. With this in mind, we are looking forward to working with the creative community in Galway and in the rest of the country.”
Fíbín moved in this week and its first step will be to hire a wide range of people to fulfil its needs and programme. Once that team is in place, the company will announce its programme and future plans.
“An Taibhdhearc le Fíbín will create a dynamic home for artists working in the Irish language, whether undiscovered, emerging or established. While building on and celebrating the rich culture of An Taibhdhearc, Fíbín will bring a fresh new energy to the space, cultivating and supporting new voices, presenting new stories, embracing new performance ideas,” says the group’s Artistic Director Philip Doherty.
