Everything’s coming up roses for Me Auld Flower

Twenty months on from his continent-hopping, image heavy debut album, Connemara native BP Nally, better known as Me Auld Flower, has announced a sequel sister album, set for release in November. The Vaults of Consciousness, Volume II continues the lyrical work of its predecessor – addressing topics as vast as the human condition through a series of concrete, simple and evocative images.
Sonically though, it is a big step away from the collaborative instrumental effort that was the first LP. On this occasion, the folk singer-songwriter crafted the album alone in his spare bedroom.
The result is a fluid, consistent sound throughout. The first single from the album, Father Griffin Avenue, drops this Saturday and it sets out a path for exploration around Galway. Though it gives the street name pride of place in its refrain, BP explains that the song deals more with the moments that make up a walk around the city.
“I find something evocative in certain names,” he notes. “The song itself could be about any street – it could just as easily have been Sea Road or somewhere similar. There was just something about Father Griffin Avenue that worked in my head and worked with the lyrics. I like having something like that as a starting point and building it from there.
“Father Griffin Avenue is just a launchpad for the idea of the song. The song is based in Galway and it is based along that street walking through town. I would say it’s a song of movement. It’s about moments that come and go and things that are over in an instant.”
