Emma takes centre stage in raunchy one-woman parody

The one-woman raunchy comedy that is 51 Shades of Maggie will visit the city’s Town Hall Theatre on Monday and Tuesday, November 11 and 12.
This stage parody of the best-selling 50 Shades of Grey explores the romantic world of Maggie Muff, a working class Dublin girl, who is looking for love and thinks she knows what she wants in a man, despite being unfulfilled after a number of failed relationships. Then she is called in by the Social Welfare office, with the unexpected result that she meets the man of her dreams – her own Mr Big, or so she thinks. The big issue in the play is if she will end up with Mr Big and if she is able for the antics that go on in his ‘private room of pain’, says Emma Barry, who is relishing the role of Maggie. Maggie is a straight-talking Northsider, Mr Big is a Southsider with particular tastes and so there is a class issue here, although it’s dealt with via comedy, she explains.“Mr Big is into S&M and things like that. This is a world that’s new to her and the way she responds is funny.” Maggie goes along with his demands initially, but the excitement for the audience is in finding out if she continues with this man, adds Emma.“You get to see her reaction to what he is doing.”
