'Drive the Cold Winter Away' with Early Music Festival

Galway Early Music Festival marks a quarter of a century this year and will celebrate that important anniversary with Drive the Cold Winter Away, a programme which will be streamed online on Wednesday and Thursday, December, 16 and 17.
This two-day festival of “joyous medieval and baroque music” will include lunchtime and evening concerts from St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church and Claregalway Castle; a multi-media talk on secular music; and free fun outdoor events, all being streamed live.
"We've created a smaller bespoke festival for 2020 to ensure that we don't let the occasion of our 25th birthday pass without a celebration that complies with Covid-19 regulations,” says Maura Ó Cróinín, Chair and Director of Galway Early Music Festival.
The Festival’s main aim is connecting its medieval music programme with Galway City’s medieval origins, she explains. And for that reason, the event has always had close links with St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, an institution which celebrates its 700th anniversary this year. The church’s celebrations have been curtailed due to Covid-19, but some events have been taking place online and will include two concerts from Galway Early Music Festival.
