Connection and mortality explored in dance show Triple Bill

Galway’s Dance Artist in Residence Magdalena Hylak will present Triple Bill, an evening of compelling contemporary dance at the Black Box Theatre on Saturday, August 30, at 8pm.

The show will feature three solo works, one from Magdalena and the others from two other leading Irish contemporary dancers, Fearghus Ó Conchúir and Mufutau Yusuf.

Triple Bill will be a “physical, poetic and deeply personal” series of dances, exploring themes of human connection, impermanence and the expressive capacity of the body, according to Magdalena, who adds that this will be first time these solo works will be staged together in Galway.

She will perform Standing, for which she will be joined by dancer Roberta Ceginskaite. This is a duet that “unfolds beyond traditional notions of genre or technique”.

The performance is a dialogue between two bodies coexisting, responding and redefining connection. Set to a powerful sound score by Brussels-based composer Lionel Kasparian, the work becomes a raw and visceral exploration of presence and the silent negotiations between moving bodies.

Unreeling is Fearghus Ó Conchúir’s piece for the triple-bill.  This solo show was created by the London-based Irish choreographer in response to isolation. It explores the connections that sustain us and those that allow for personal and collective growth. He reflects on themes of identity and belonging in a performance that, he says, will bridge the personal and political.

Venerations from Nigerian-born Irish choreographer and performer Mufutau Yusuf is a dance rooted in ancestral memory and the fragility of life. Drawing inspiration from the writings of Emily Dickinson and Samuel Beckett, Venerations contemplates mortality, transformation and the quiet meaning found in our brief time on earth.

“It’s a true privilege to welcome Fearghus Ó Conchúir and Mufutau Yusuf to perform their celebrated works in Galway for the very first time,” says Magdalena.

In addition to the performance in the Black Box, the dancers will be involved in a symposium as part of Triple Bill. Designed for members of the dance sector, it “will offer a space for reflection, discussion and professional exchange”, says Magdalena, explaining that it forms an important part of the broader context of Triple Bill, reinforcing its commitment to dialogue within the area of dance.

That will take place at Nuns’ Island Theatre.

Triple Bill, the performance, will be in the Black Box Theatre on Saturday  August, 30, at 8pm and runs for 80 minutes.

Tickets are €22/€20, from www.tht.ie, 091-569777 or the Town Hall box office.
