Conamara winners at Féile Drámaíochta

A Conamara drama group took home a Reviewers Choice Award in the National Drama Festival for Irish language amateur dramatics held in Westport Town Hall Theatre.
Aisteoirí an Spidéil were presented with the award for their two plays – An tOthar, adapted for the stage by Joe Steve Ó Neachtain based on the short story by Máirtín Ó Cadhain produced by Mike P Ó Conaola, and Oifig an Phoist, adapted for the stage by Mike P Ó Conaola based on the short story by Liam Ó Flaithearta produced by Caitríona Ní Dhomhnaill.
Both were recognised for the directing of a large cast and the inventive use of the set.
Cumann Drámaíochta Ollscoil na Gaillimhe were also on stage with their play, Coinneál Orainn by Darach Ó Scolaí – and although they didn’t win an award, the reviewers paid tribute to such a young cast who took on a complicated, difficult play and performed it well for the audience.
“I extend my heartiest congratulations to everyone who took part in the 2026 festival” said Muireann Ní Dhroighneáin, National Coordinator of Performing Arts for An tOireachtas.
“We thank all those who assisted with organising this year’s festival and Westport Town Hall Theatre team.
“We’re looking forward to continuing our work with Irish language-based drama companies, to encouraging new companies, and together strengthening and fostering amateur dramatics across the country.”
Play of the Festival went to Cumann Drámaíochta Naomh Pádraig, Westport, for ‘An Rud Eatarthu’ by Séamas Mac Eachmharcaigh, while Best Actor went to Pádraig Ó Briain, Aisteoirí Chúil Aodha, Cork, for ‘Séadna agus an Fear Dubh’ by Father Peadar Ó Laoghaire.
The 2027 National Drama Festival will be held Athlone’s Dean Crowe Theatre from March 18 to 20.
