Perseverance and proactivity – plus, given their band name, a perfect sense of timing – have all played their part in helping Galway band The Clockworks secure their maiden deal with legendary record executive Alan McGee.

The four-piece have been based in London for the last couple of months and their decision to relocate seems to have paid off instantly.

The Clockworks are something of a perfect role model for local bands. And early success in London is no surprise to anyone that has seen the group perform live in Galway – their frenzied, energetic set has grown tighter and more original over the course of the last three years.

It’s not just dedication to their sound that makes the band so impressive.

All four members have a passion for what they do and a willingness to learn and improve, whether that comes from attending as many local gigs as possible or – as was the case with enticing their new manager – being pro-active and pragmatic in their approach to the industry.

And this week, frontman James McGregor revealed how the deal came about with McGee, the man who signed Oasis, Primal Scream and more to the legendary Creation Records.

“It started about a year ago when we were back in Ireland,” James recalls.

“I got in touch with [Alan] and then Sean got in touch with him and we hadn’t heard anything back but it was fine. You just sort of send those emails… You send one email and you never hear back, you send another one and you never hear back.

“So we just let it lie for a while and got on with our lives.

“Anyway, we moved to London and about two weeks into being here, Sean sent an Instagram message to McGee. He got back straight away and said ‘Where do you rehearse? I’m coming to see you.’”

The story is romantic. Certainly, it feels like one of those big moments that successful bands talk about as being pivotal in their development. But The Clockworks have put enough effort in to deserve a little bit of geographical luck at an important time and they made the most of their opportunity when it presented itself.
