Cellist David Cohen for city concert

Belgian cellist David Cohen will be in concert at the Aula Maxima at NUI Galway at 8pm next Wednesday night, October 30,  accompanied by Italian Claudio Trovajoli on piano to give Music for Galway audiences an insight as to why he is regarded as one of the most exciting young cellists performing today.

The concert will open with Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata. Written for the now vanished instrument of the same name – a bowed guitar –  and accompanied by piano, it is now mostly played on cello, viola or double bass.

Another arrangement, this time by Cohen himself, of Schnittke’s Suite in the Old Style will close the evening and there will also be a performance of the Shostakovitch Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, Op. 40.

Most anticipated, however, will be the Irish premiere of Ian Wilson’s The Little Spanish Prison. Commissioned by Cohen, this piece was premiered in April at London’s Wigmore Hall.  Ian Wilson will be present to introduce the piece.

Tickets are €20/€16 or €6 for fulltime students and are available online at tht.ie, or from Music for Galway 091 705962, and Opus 2, No. 4 High Street, Galway City.
