Celebrating the music of the US rock band who made a seismic impact in the nineties, Pearl Jem come to Monroe’s Live next Friday, August 26.

Released in 1991, Pearl Jam’s Ten was one of the biggest albums of the decade. It propelled the young band into the spotlight, and saw them pitched as rivals to fellow superstars Nirvana.  In 1993, Pearl Jam opened for Neil Young in Slane, as part of a bill that also included Van Morrison and The Saw Doctors.  A massive chunk of the young crowd only had ears for Pearl Jam, however, and a clearly bamboozled Eddie Vedder stood back as they sang every lyric he had written for their debut album. Although often uncomfortable in the spotlight, Pearl Jam followed Ten with the hugely successful Vs and  the darker, disconcerting Vitalogy arrived in 1994. Pearl Jam’s place in rock’s pantheon was secured and, to date, the band have sold over 60 million records.

Pearl Jam are still touring, but it’s been a long time since they’ve played in Ireland, and Northern Ireland band Pearl Jem, who hit the road in 2006, help meet the demand for their tunes.

With their lead singer doing a spot-on job of Eddie Vedder’s vocals, the band have become a fixture in Monroe’s and their gigs are always jammed.

■ Doors for the show are 10pm, with tickets €15 /€12 online.
