Baile Beag Mór ushers in a new dramatic era at An Taibhdhearc
Baile Beag Mór, the world premiere of a new play, written and directed by award-winning theatre and film director Philip Doherty, is currently running at the city’s An Taibhdhearc Theatre.
It kickstarts the first season of ‘Fíbín sa Taibhdhearc’, in which the production company, which is headquartered in Baile na hAbhann, has taken up residency in the national Irish-language theatre.
The season will consist of eight world premieres, including shows by new writers, site-specific pieces on Conamara beaches and work by first-time directors.
Fíbín are also opening a new theatre bar/ café venue at An Taibhdhearc and refurbishing the façade of the building, as well as offering a musical and cultural programme.
For Baile Beag Mór – a family mystery that develops into a noir-style thriller – Philip has teamed up with award-winning set designer Sabine Dargent and experienced actors Sorcha Fox, Séamus Hughes and Ann-Marie Horan, alongside newer talent, Martha Dunlea, Gearóid Kavanagh, and Ruairí Heading.
The drama, which includes a live jazz band, tells the story of Patrick, a soulful, troubled man, who unearths disturbing secrets when he delves into his family’s past. His quest brings him back to the 1920s when his grandfather escaped the Irish Civil War by fleeing to Prohibition America, where he found solace in an Irish language speakeasy in New York.
