Are you there Una? by Elaine Mears, one of the most highly anticipated shows of this year’s Galway Theatre Festival, has sold out its run in the Mick Lally Theatre from May 3-6. It will also be performed at Áras Éanna on Inis Oírr on Saturday, May 25, and tickets for that are also selling fast

Elaine captured people’s imagination last year when she invited the public to add their memories to the story of Una Taaffe (1922-2006), one of Galway City’s best-known characters. The result was Are You There Una?, which was developed as part of Druid's FUEL residency and Galway Theatre Festival.

It’s an exploration of identity – looking beneath the myths about people we think we know.

“Most towns have that larger-than-life, colourful iconic character, unique to their place,” says Elaine about her inspiration for the piece. “Stories and myths surround such personalities, and some hold more truth than others. These characters often evoke strong memories and feelings. But, what truth lies behind their stories? What do we find when we peel away the myths about such legends?”
