Canadian songwriter Amelia Curran returns to Monroe’s Live on Saturday June 24, as part of a tour to mark the release of her latest album, Watershed. She has described her eight album, a mix of folk and folk-pop, as “an activist record”, explaining that it grew out of her work as an advocate for mental healthcare.

Curran is a songwriter who has garnered some acclaim along the way – in 2010, she received a highly prestigious Juno Roots and Traditional Album of the Year for Hunter, Hunter.

“That was delightful,” Amelia said in a previous interview with the Tribune. “I had never won an award before, and it meant a lot.”

Describing the Juno as “something you stick on the résumé,” she felt it helped her work get “that second glance.”

Amelia Curran also writes poetry and plays, which may seem like different skills, but which fulfill her desire to write.

“I write a lot of poetry and stories that are slowly developing into other things. I’ve no particular goal for that work, but it’s something I can’t help doing,” she says. “Songs are one medium of writing, and I love to write.”

Monroe’s continues its good track record of folk gigs with this show, and fans of the genre will enjoy Curran’s set.

■ Doors 8pm, tickets €10.
