The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is back for 2022 and will visit Galway’s Town Hall Theatre next Wednesday, May 11, with a selection of short action and adventure films

These films, from the wildest corners of the planet, were chosen from hundreds of entries into the Banff Mountain Film Festival, which is held every November in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Films being shown will include Exit the North Pole, focusing on polar explorers Børge Ousland and Mike Horn. In 24-hour darkness and with temperatures down to minus 40 degrees, the two attempt a 1,500km ski expedition across the frozen Arctic Ocean, via the North Pole. With drifting ice and the threat of polar bears, it’s a gruelling journey.

Dream Mountain follows a woman who is defying societal norms. Elite climber Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita had a trailblazing career, summiting K2, Everest and other major peaks until her life changed with the birth of her son. But Pasang decides that to be the best mother she can, she needs to follow her passion and attempts her dream mountain: a spectacular Nepalese peak called Cholatse.

West Highland Way captures an attempt by mountain biker Rab Wardell to set a new record on the challenging West Highland Way.

Stretching from Edinburgh to the Highland town of Fort William, the 95-mile Way is a long-distance path loved by walkers.

It’s also the subject of fierce competition between elite mountain bikers, all vying to set new speed records. They include former pro rider Rab as he attempts to make history in his homeland.

Wednesday’s event will also feature a free prize draw for outdoor goods from the tour’s partners.

“As well as adrenalin-packed stories from the world’s best adventure filmmakers, Banff events are a celebration of the great outdoors with a vibrant atmosphere – and we guarantee audiences will leave inspired to have an adventure of their own,” says tour director Nell Teasdale.
