Up to 70 Galway workers to lose Aviva jobs

Date Published: 30-Nov-2011

At least 70 jobs are to be lost at Aviva Insurance in Galway – and potentially dozens more – after it emerged this week that staff from Dublin and the UK may be redeployed here.

It’s understood that no workers will lose their jobs before next March, and redundancies will be carried out over a period of up to 24 months.

Aviva’s Director of Direct Business, Charlotte Moran gave a briefing to staff at the branch in Knocknacarra on Tuesday morning, where further details of the company’s plans were outlined to staff.

Workers were initially confident that they would keep their jobs, however, at a meeting of UNITE union members on Tuesday night, it emerged that a cloud remains over their future.

The company employs around 230 people in Knocknacarra and a further twelve in a general insurance branch in Eyre Square.

It’s understood that the twelve workers in Eyre Square will lose their jobs, and around 60 more in Knocknacarra.
