United boss Caulfield demands positive response to Athlone Town loss

JOHN Caulfield has demanded a better performance from his side as they head to Dublin on Friday to take on the early First Division pace-setters, Cabinteely, in Stradbrook (7.45pm).
The Galway United manager has apologised to United fans for his side’s performance in the opening 45 minutes of last Friday’s 3-1 defeat away to Athlone Town, and has vowed that his side will not be as dismal again, starting this weekend.
“We need a performance on Friday, last week was poor, it wasn’t good enough. Every week, every team is out there to beat you, that was Athlone on Friday and for the first 45 minutes we weren’t at the races and that was very disappointing.
“All I can say to our supporters is we won’t have a performance, a 45 minutes, like that again. I think we are a very good team, it didn’t look that way in that first-half performance [against Athlone], we didn’t play well, but we won’t be like that again,” he said.
His players will need to improve for a trip to the league leaders, the only side that has won both of its opening games, and one which might feel it has a point to prove given what happened at the end of last season.
The Dublin club started last season in blistering fashion, winning six of their first seven matches, but the wheels came off somewhat after that, and in the end of the truncated season, they just about fell over the line in 5th place, one place and one point ahead of Galway United.
