Tribeswomen primed to overcome Donegal for second time in a fortnight

IT’S a competition Galway have never won, but the Tribeswomen will be hoping to take an important step forward in their quest for a first ever Division 1 league title at Pearse Park, Longford on Saturday (2.15pm).
Five times previously, Galway have contested the top flight National League final only to come out the vanquished on each occasion . . . 1979, 2005, 2007, 2010 and three years ago when falling to Cork.
Tim Rabbitte’s charges are again on the brink of securing another league final place when they take on Donegal for the second time in just a fortnight, having overcome the Ulster team by 2-13 to 0-10 in the concluding round of the group campaign in Corofin last Sunday week.
It’s rarely easy beating rivals of much the same calibre for the second time in the same competition, but to achieve that objective in such a quick turnaround makes the task all the more challenging.
Galway, however, have been making notable strides over the past few seasons. Stephen Glennon’s two-year managerial reign led to a significant increase in the quality of preparation and that standard has been maintained under Rabbitte, who is now the top man having served as team coach in 2018.
Apart from falling to All-Ireland champions Dublin in Moycullen, Galway have come through their Division 1 campaign unbeaten and, in a curious turn of events, the final round of group matches was virtually academic as the four semi-finalists were already known
Galway and Donegal, along with Cork and Dublin, were all considerably ahead of the other Division 1 teams, leaving the make-up of the semi-final pairings the only issue at stake the weekend before last.
