Galway League looking to lift Oscar Traynor Cup for just a second time in competition’s history

An unbeaten campaign through four rounds of the Oscar Traynor Cup has projected the Galway League through to a final meeting with the Limerick League on Sunday in Eamonn Deacy Park (2pm).
This is not a competition that has brought great reward to the local league, with their only success coming in 1971. There have been many opportunities to better that record, but defeats in six finals since that win has certainly ensured that Galway have endured more heartache than success.
However, hope springs eternal as Brendan O’Connor’s charges bid to put an end to that forgettable record. Apart from their opening game away to Roscommon in which they found themselves two down at the break before recovering to win 5-2, the progress and improvement in performances along the way had been impressive.
Mayo were dismissed on a 2-0 scoreline, while a 5-0 victory over Sligo-Leitrim maintained their progress and ensured they ended up as provincial champions with three wins from three.
The semi-final meeting with Wexford was another step up, with the south-east side being the defending champions having defeated Limerick 2-1 in the final last year, and Galway rose to the challenge with a 4-1 victory.
They led 1-0 at the break courtesy of an Enda Curran goal, which was the least they deserved, but the former Galway United striker went on to add two more on the resumption to complete his hat-trick and along with another strike from Calum Browne, it put them in cruise control at four up before Wexford bagged a late consolation.
With all the talent in Limerick and the strength of the club scene there, this has ensured that they are one of the most decorated leagues in the country with seven titles – the last which arrived in 2019.
Mind you, their passage to the final was not clear cut, as they required an extra-time winner to defeat Donegal 2-1 in the other semi-final. Earlier in their provincial campaign, they defeated the Clare League 4-2; before seeing off the Munster Senior League side 3-0.
Their selection is dominated by players from Fairview Rangers with five of them starting in the latter encounter, with others from Pike Rovers, Ballynanty, Regional, and Aisling Annacotty. No doubt they will travel with confidence, with memories of a defeat in last year’s final long put to bed.
The Galway management duo of Brendan O’Connor and Stuart Donoghue have prepared their side diligently throughout the campaign and speaking to City Sport this week, O’Connor says he is looking forward to the challenge.
“Of course it is everyone’s ambition to win a national title and that is the task facing us on Sunday. We have enjoyed a good campaign on our run to this stage, and I believe we have got better with each game. No doubt the Wexford contest was our biggest challenge and I believe the outcome fully tells the story of that game.
“Our side is a mixture of very experienced players and some young talent and they are the perfect blend. We have prepared well for the game over the past few weeks with regular sessions together and all of this is bringing the lads closer.
“They are all local lads and know one another well, so everyone feels comfortable in the group. From a Limerick point of view, we have watched some of their previous games and I am very familiar with a lot of their players. They all play with good clubs, and some are Junior international players.
“I believe if we go out and play to the best of our ability, we can win on Sunday. We are at home and hopefully will have a big crowd supporting us in Eamonn Deacy Park,” he said.
Colm Whelan is a prolific talent from Oranmore, and the 19-years-old has been a regular starter throughout the campaign and he sees this as an opportunity to win something for his county.
“Representing the league is a great honour and this is the highest level in the game. Playing with so many lads who have vast experience and insight into the game is so beneficial. Our progress in the cup so far is very enjoyable and we hope we can complete the task with success on Sunday,” he said.
