Scoring feast sees Galway reel in flattering Waterford

Galway 4-28
Waterford 3-23
SO many things will be lost in this blizzard of scoring at Pearse Stadium on Sunday. There was such an excess of headline-grabbing feats piled up by Galway and Waterford hurlers, that some might not even be recorded for posterity.
If any confirmation was needed that modern-day hurling has turned into a shooter’s paradise, what happened in Salthill in the penultimate round of matches in Division One Group A provided it. A whopping 58 scores in total turned the occasion into a nightmare afternoon for the rival defences.
We have become used to high-scoring shoot-outs in hurling, but Sunday’s fast and furious contest reached another level altogether – and it’s not necessarily a good thing either. Great scores used to be a precious commodity, not they are too common place.
Imagine assembling an impressive haul of 3-23 and still ending up being beaten by eight points. That was a flattering Waterford’s lot at Pearse Stadium after Galway gradually caught fire to keep alive their hopes of National League glory.
Once the Tribesmen found their rhythm in the second quarter, they were devastating and, in the process, buried the theory that they don’t possess the knack for scoring goals. Seven points in arrears at one juncture of the opening-half, they hit an unanswered 2-4 before the break to turn the match on its head.
After a blistering start playing with the wind – the highlight a well taken Jack Prendergast third minute goal – and opening daylight between the teams, Waterford must have been perplexed and rattled to end up finding themselves 3-13 to 2-12 in arrears at half-time.
