SALTHILL-Knocknacrra secured top spot in Group Two with a comfortable 1-17 to 0-10 victory over reigning Intermediate champions Caltra, who now face a relegation semi-final.

The Seasiders established a strong lead before half-time and though Caltra improved after the interval, the outcome was never seriously in doubt.

The forecast proved accurate, scattering onlookers underneath the stand for shelter. The heavy rain arrived in Tuam right before the throw-in, and it took a few minutes for players to adjust to the extreme elements.

Finian Hanley has a star-studded panel at his disposal, and it was 2024 All-Star Robert Finnerty who got the scoring underway after eight minutes on Sunday, curling his first effort over in his usual style.

Matthew Thompson also featured strongly in this contest, recording 0-4 from play in each of the past two games. He doubled the Seasiders’ advantage before Alan Naughton kicked a classy response for Caltra.

Odhran Loughrey was on hand to cut out a goal opportunity as Salthill-Knocknacarra probed, while Shaun Keane saw an effort flash wide at the other end. Thompson, Finnerty, and Cathal Sweeney, who made his first championship start, kicked consecutive scores as the 2025 finalists led 0-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

Salthill-Knocknacarra threatened the Caltra goal numerous times before half-time but failed to convert on each occasion. Sean Costello’s speculative shot was followed by a huge chance from Finnerty, however Loughrey’s outstretched leg sent it out for a ’45. Finnerty earned a penalty but blazed it over, rather than under the bar, increasing the Seasiders lead after 20 minutes.

Alan Naughton fired over a couple of frees, however Caltra struggled to carve out opportunities, with Daniel O’Flaherty, John Maher and Niall Hanahoe providing huge physicality in the middle third for Salthill-Knocknacarra.

Sean Costello threatened for goal again, but settled for a quickfire brace of points before scores from Finnerty, Thompson and Mikey Mullery pushed Salthill-Knocknacarra into a 0-11 to 0-3 half-time lead.

Five second-half wides somewhat tempered Salthill-Knocknacarra’s dominance, although they remained in a comfortable position throughout but may require greater ruthlessness against sterner opposition.

Thompson, Cillian O’Toole, Michael Kitt, Finnerty and Robert Walzer all found their range to ensure Salthill-Knocknacarra kept a minimum of a seven-point lead, while Naughton (three times) and Kelan Murray struck responses for Caltra, who began showing improvements in the final quarter.

A Shaun Keane score was followed by a splendid effort from Darragh McCabe, raising the game’s first orange flag, cutting the deficit to just six points.

Alan Naughton took a free outside the arc which would have cut Salthill-Knocknacarra’s lead to just four entering injury-time, with a comeback potentially on the cards, however the shot trailed wide. A James O’Meara score and a late Daniel O’Flaherty goal restored Salthill-Knocknacarra’s dominance on the scoreboard.

Gabriel Naughton’s charges now prepare for a relegation semi-final battle with St. James’, last season’s quarter-finalists. Salthill-Knocknacarra end the group stage with three wins from three.
