Reality check in Wexford as Galway WFC stumble badly

Wexford Youths WFC 5
Galway WFC 0

THOUGH there were some difficulties in a few of their earlier league games, the Galway WFC bubble was blown apart in Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday afternoon as they secumbed to a five goal walloping.
On a day when once more the gulf between the top three in the Airtricity Women's National League and the rest was laid bare, the visitors really missed the services of injured leading scorer Rachel Kearns and the suspended Chloe Singleton.
Galway WFC’s woes were added to when they lost defender Keara Cormican to injury very early in the game and while they competed on equal terms for a lot of the opening half, the concession of two goals in a five minute spell just before the break turned matters very much in favour of the home side.
The punishment continued on the resumption as Wexford Youths added another quick brace before the hour mark and thus ended any possibility of a Galway recovery.
The early exchanges were uneventful as chances were scarce, with a Lynley McKey effort going closest to a breakthrough for the visitors, before good fortune was not on their side as Shauna Fox deflected a cross into her own net to give Wexford the lead on 38 minutes.
They were then very quickley exposed for the second. As a Galway attack broke down, the home side counter attacked in rapid fashion with the impressive Ellen Molloy running unchallenged for about 50 metres before laying the ball into the path of Lynn Marie Grant, who fired powerfully past Maja Zajc to give them a 2-0 interval advantage.
