Nine of the 12 players to make final round play-off hail from Renmore club

The top pitch & putt players from around the country travelled to Galway last weekend for the annual Galway Masters tournament, but it was a Galway man who made local knowledge count to take the title.

The event, run on a Scratch Cup format, took place at Mellows Pitch & Putt on the grounds of Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa Army Barracks in Renmore, where club member, Dave O'Connell, came out on top after the 54-hole tournament.

The competition began with two 18-hole rounds, after which the top 12 players advanced to a final 18-hole play-off, and it wasn't just O'Connell who made the most of local knowledge, as nine of the 12 play-off qualifiers were from the Mellows club.

O’Connell’s win saw him add to his Scratch Cup victory over 10 years ago at this venue, as the Mervue man rattled off a fabulous final round of 6-under 48 to give him a total of 17-under (145) on a day when Mellows players took eight out of the nine prizes on offer.
