GALWAY United went trick or treating in Wicklow on Halloween afternoon and came away with all the sweets after Wilson Waweru pounced for the only goal of the game eight minutes from time to book the Tribesmen’s place in this Friday’s First Division play-offs final.

A season that started like a damp squib is ending in a stunning fireworks display, as United have gone from a side that wouldn’t say boo to a goose to one that has opponents absolutely scared stiff, with Bray Wanderers the latest side to be shook to the bone by a United side that is simply oozing confidence.

When John Caulfield was named as the new United manager back in August, the side was second from bottom in the table and looked like they couldn’t beat snow off a rope. Since then, they have gone on a stunning run of results, with eight wins in 11 games propelling United from forlorn losers to the play-offs final, and potentially to within 180 minutes of top-flight football.

“We’re not there yet, we still have one, and possibly two, massive games coming up, but to come up here and get a win two weeks on the trot was fantastic,” United captain, Shane Duggan, said after the game last Saturday.

“It was just winning a game of football, though, we have done nothing yet. If we go out and don’t get the result next week, what good is it? We have to get the job done, John knowns that and all the players know that, we have to go out next Friday and get the win and hopefully take it one step closer to going back to the Premier Division,” he said.

It was United’s second consecutive 1-0 win over Bray at the Carlisle Grounds in a week. The previous Saturday, Carlton Ubaezuonu scored the only goal of the game in the third minute of injury-time to snatch a win that kept United’s play-off hopes alive.
