GALWAY soccer enthusiasts who haven’t been all soccered out by now with the World Cup can look forward to a packed weekend of non-stop action in the Derek Crowe Memorial 6-A-Sides.
This will be the 15th annual tournament, which is held in memory of the former Mervue Utd/Galway Utd player, and takes place this Saturday and Sunday (10/11th July) in Mervue.
The competition has once again attracted a huge entry of the maximum 64 teams with over 130 games due to be played over the weekend on three 6-a-side pitches along McHugh Avenue in Mervue. The first of the group matches kick-off on Saturday morning at 10.30am with 32 teams progressing to the knockout stage on Sunday after Saturday’ group stages where each team is guaranteed three games.
The knockout stage will begin on Sunday morning before the tournament will reach its conclusion with the final timed for 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon. The competition has firmly established itself has one of the top tournaments in Connacht over the summer months and has attracted a number of entries from outside Galway again this year.
Last year’s winners, Mass Sportskit, will be looking to retain the title for the third year in a row but the Galway Hibs outfit will face the usual competitive opposition again this year.
