GALWAY’S senior ladies footballers look set to be strong All-Ireland contenders once again.

After losing the 2024 All-Ireland final to Kerry and suffering an extra-time All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Dublin last year, the Tribeswomen have shown they are not far away.

This weekend, the women in maroon will be aiming for the perfect confidence boost ahead of the championship when attempting to win the Division One league title for the first time, having previously lost seven finals between 1979 and 2023.

Manager Daniel Moynihan has used the league to integrate players, including those returning from Kilkerrin Clonberne’s triumphant club campaign. Galway recorded wins over Kildare, Meath, Kerry, Dublin and Meath and tasted defeats to Cork and Waterford in Division One.

At last Thursday’s league final preview, both Moynihan and Louise Ward made their ambitions clear.

“There’s no point lying about it, we have to accept in large parts we are playing some good football, we have carried on from where we were last year. We’ve had a couple of blips along the way, we were within a kick of an All-Ireland final last year,” said Galway senior ladies football manager Daniel Moynihan.

“That still grinds quite a few people last year so we have been knocking on the door the last two years. We have to be ready for these games in the championship when they come thick and fast and if we do and perform at the levels we know we can, we know we will be there, thereabouts,” added Moynihan.

Louise Ward doesn’t feel Galway are far away from lifting the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time since 2004.

“I don't think we would be here playing if we didn’t think we were capable of winning the All-Ireland is what I wouldsay. Obviously, you have to focus on every step, we are not looking at an All-Ireland final in August.

"I don’t think that we are very far away but you just have to take every game as it comes and all the factors that come with each game you play along the way as well. At the minute, we are happy with where we are at this stage in the league and what we are building towards and the panel that we have developed,” concluded Ward.
