Keating’s goal is enough to keep Utd momentum going

GALWAY United secured a hard-fought victory over struggling Cobh Ramblers at St Colman's Park last Friday thanks to a Ruairi Keating goal midway through the first half, which keeps the Tribesmen in pole position for a second place finish.

The victory puts them six points clear of third place UCD with only Wexford, Bray Wanderers and Cork City left to play before the play-offs.

United came into the fixture in confident form after defeating UCD 4-1 at Eamonn Deacy Park the week before which confirmed their position in this season's First Division play-offs.

It was quite the opposite for Darren Murphy's ninth place Cobh outfit who have been on a poor run of form, having lost their previous five league fixtures before this home clash with United. John Caulfield's side travelled down south with the ambition of cementing their second-place finish on the table with four games to go.

It was a lively start to proceedings at St Colman's Park as both teams tried to gain momentum in a game that was always going to be a test for play-off-bound United. Set-pieces and corners were the main sources of attack for both sides with the Tribesmen starting the smarter on a dark and wintry evening in Cobh.

After a decent spell of possession for United, the away side struck the all-important goal in the 26th minute. Mikie Rowe went close with an effort inside the box that was deflected wide before the scoring was opened from the resulting corner.
