GALWAY manager Cathal Murray was making no excuses post-match for his team’s flat display during their defeat to Cork in round one of the All-Ireland Camogie Championship last Saturday.

Murray acknowledged the visitors’ superiority on the day and feels that his players need to raise their game substantially on Sunday when they face Waterford (Walsh Park, 2pm). The Déise overcame Tipperary by 0-16 to 1-10 last weekend.

‘‘We were poor today,’’ he said. ‘‘That’s not our standard and we know that. Cork were the better team by a mile and there are no excuses from us. We could have conceded three goals in the second half.

‘‘It’s disappointing, and we know we have an awful lot of work to do. But look, we just have to take it on the chin and get a reaction down in Waterford. It’s a short turnaround now, and we’re going to have to improve hugely for next Sunday. Based at today, we’re well off it at the moment, and we’re going to have to knuckle down and get up to the mark fairly fast.’’

Murray was hoping that Niamh Mallon’s shoulder injury, which forced her withdrawal late in the first half, wouldn’t be as serious as it first appeared.

‘‘We don’t know yet how bad Niamh’s injury is. She’s obviously a huge player for us. Jennifer Hughes is out for the three group games, but we’re hoping she might get back after that.

"Carrie (Dolan) picked up a knock a few weeks ago so we couldn’t start her today. The panel is definitely being tested at the moment,’’ he added.
