Galway opened their Leinster Senior Hurling Championship campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Kilkenny 3-25 to 1-16 in Pearse Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Micheal Donoghue’s side already handed Kilkenny an 18-point defeat in the National Hurling League, many expected a strong response from “The Cats.” Instead, the men in maroon and white controlled proceedings once again, securing a comfortable 15-point win.

A key moment came early in the second half when Kilkenny’s John Donnelly was sent off. Before that, the sides were evenly matched, with Galway narrowly leading 0-7 to 0-6 after 24 minutes.

Scores from Padraic Mannion, Gavin Lee, Aaron Niland, Jason Rabbitte, and Conor Whelan kept Galway ahead, while TJ Reid, Eoin Cody, Liam Moore, and Jordan Molloy kept Kilkenny within touching distance.

Galway’s first goal came after a slick move involving Cian Daniels, Tiernan Killeen, and Rory Burke, with Burke finishing calmly past goalkeeper Aidan Tallis. Burke struck again just before halftime, converting a penalty after Mikey Carey was shown a black card for a foul on Niland, giving Galway a 2-8 to 0-9 lead at the break.

The game tilted further in the Tribesmen’s favour when Donnelly saw red for a high challenge on captain Darren Morrissey. Galway capitalised, with Ronan Glennon, Burke, and Niland adding points, before Rabbitte burst through for his side’s third goal to extend the lead to 3-12 to 0-12.

Although Reid converted a penalty for Kilkenny on 60 minutes to narrow the gap to 3-16 to 1-13, Galway finished strongly. They outscored their opponents 0-9 to 0-3 in the closing stages, with substitutes Darragh Neary, Colm Molloy, Tom Monaghan, Evan Niland, and Conor Cooney all contributing late on.
