Galway United's game with Shelbourne called -off due to unplayable pitch

Heavy downpour just before 6pm left pools of water on parts of the pitch
Galway United's Premier Division game with Shelbourne which was scheduled for Eamonn Deacy Park this evening (Friday) has been called-off after the referee deemed the pitch unplayable.
Club officials and volunteers had been forking the pitch after heavy rain all day in the city left pools of water on the pitch, with a particularly heavy downpour around 5.45pm doing the main damage.
Referee Rob Hennessy carried out a number of inspections after arriving at the ground, and decided at 7pm that the pitch was unplayable.
It was not the only League of Ireland game to fall by the wayside this evening due to the weather, as Waterford's home game with Drogheda United in the Premier Division; and Treaty United's home game with Cork City in the First Division, have also been called off. There has been no announcement on a new date for the game, but tickets sold for the game will be valid for the refixture.
The ground had opened just after 6.30pm, and a couple of hundred fans had gathered in the ground; while Shelbourne are believed to have left Dublin at 7.30am this morning in a bid to avoid traffic delays due to fuel protests when travelling west for the game.
