Galway United’s Cup misery continue against The Hoops

THE Galway United camp said in the lead-up to this game that a cup tie with the best team in the country would show them the level the aspire to – well, now they know, and it is a fair jump from where they are at the moment.

That’s not to say the gap can’t be bridged, for while United were completely outplayed in the first half, their performance in the second 45 minutes was much better, and it should be noted that United were seriously understrength for the game, with four regular starters missing from the line-up

Tuam native, Rory Gaffney, started up front for the Hoops alongside senior Republic of Ireland international, Graham Burke, but the big team news was in the United camp, with Shane Duggan a surprise omission from the squad.

With Conor McCormack missing the game through suspension, Duggan was the natural replacement, but last season’s captain didn’t play a part on Friday. One rumour doing the rounds was that Duggan moved to Treaty United; another was that he had downed tools to try and force through a move.

John Caufield was asked about Duggan’s absence after the game but all the manager would say was that “we had some lads missing but we’ll be back in training on Monday.”

United were also missing regular starters, Killian Brouder, David Hurley and Conor O’Keeffe through injury; while Shane Doherty and Carlton Ubaezuonu were also injury absentees, forcing Caulfield to mine the U19 squad for bodies, with Charlie Concannon and Ethan Connolly – the brother of Irish international Aaron – making the step up.
